4 Pegs.

Stunt pegs, when it comes into any normal persons mind they think of their childhood and how you used to slam two on the back, two on the front and then get you mates to hop on. You would just rinse around the street all three of you holding on for dear life but enjoying that buzz and the risk of all three of you just eating shit in the chance you may loose grip or balance. Stung pegs to a Freestyle Bmxer they are a piece of equipment something that opens doors and enables them to unleash so many more tricks, also known as grinds. Now there is a long list of variations of grinds going from double pegs to even a rollercoaster's grind!

Now depending what discipline you may ride such as Street, Flatland, Park or even Vert I suppose will decide on how many pegs you really want or need to ride. For all of them really you can run four pegs but for me riding mainly Street and Park I choose to run four pegs.

Its been more of a recent change to my BMX but I've found that running four pegs it gives you a lot more opportunities giving you that option of riding opposite but also enabling you to try particular tricks or runs, now I'll admit I'm not amazing on my four pegs but the only way to get good is to ride them and just have fun which I've found, most people I ride with run at least two pegs and I would definitely say that my four pegs will be staying firmly slammed to my BMX's dropouts. Here's an example of pegs being unleashed on the streets by Ryan howard, Enjoy.Stay BAB.

Winter at Penshaw

For the first time in many weeks me and Monkey were able to brave the blistering cold and actually go and ride and outdoor skatepark, our local park Penshaw. Now Penshaw is set in the middle of a field on a hill so it was very cold but that was not stopping over the course of the day we managed to get a few tricks down. Now there were some tricks we wanted to get done but weren't happening so there will be another edit as soon as we get them done. Enjoy, Stay BAB.

Vbridge session 2.

So i've managed to escape from the depths of computer chair for the second time in a quite a few weeks now to ride my BMX. Me and nathan decided to ride the Vbridge again as its the only place with shelter and good enough to ride for the distance i can be bothered to ride. This time round i took my SLR and also took my camcorder again, we met my mate Robert down there and also his mate and had quite a productive session, got lots of clips done and also some pictures to. Im going post the pictures below and the edit will be coming soon just need a few more clips to finish of. Here are a few pictures from the session.

Moving on to today i was planning to ride Silksworth, over the last few days the snow has finally been going away and letting the nice ground that we like to ride on dry up, sadly as per usual woke up to the sight of this horrible white substance called snow falling from the sky turning my day of riding into a day of nothing. So what have you all got planned for this and has anyone managed to ride?? Stay BAB.

Gregs Birthday

So it was my main man Greg Kews birthday and for his birthday present i decided to make a sort of mixtape of all his best, funiest and nastiest falls over the years that i have filmed him ride BMX, so sadly he is no longer a teen and has moved on to become an old grandad with Big Mike enjoy it lads! so this is the video of Greg and also some other videos of gregs to freshen them fading minds of what BMX actually is due to the lack of riding in this awfull snow.

What snow?

Today me and my brother Nathan decided after getting over his Xbox dying that we would make that deadly decision and venture out into the snow and ride some kid bikes. Taking in my own advice I wrapped up with many layers and packed my bag full of very important things; old rags to dry my shoes and pedals and my camera to get footage. We were prepared and made our move, made it to the garage fine and the BMX that has been untouched in to long was still its good old self (ghetto as f**K) no punctures so all good.

Our point of riding was Vbridge which is about ten minute bike ride for me just located near Washington. The route there went pretty well apart from having to ride on quite a busy main road we made it in one piece without even having to walk (in your face snow!) So as we came down the slip road to our destination the sight that greeted us was something words cant describe in this climate, no snow or puddles in sight and a perfect roof over our heads with a nice street light, thank you very much a perfect rideable street spot with a selection of flat-banks, ledges, ghetto quarters and manual pads, perfect.

A soon as we got there the first thing that needed to be done was checking i can still bunny-hop, checked that off and riding began, managed to get a 540 on the large flatbank and few other things, but wont go to much into detail about tricks as an edit will be coming sometime next week! So me and Nathan took turns riding and filming throughout the time there and managed to a get a few clips together but overall just got to enjoy ourselves doing what we all like to do, riding kids bikes.
After a good bit of riding and some filming we decided to leave and head back home, heading home was not as easy as we had thought. I imagined a nice ride back after a good session riding my BMX but it wasn't that simple, thanks to work traffic we had to walk all the way along the main road as the road was just to busy for any attempt of riding on, so a ten minute bike ride turned into a forty minute mission home in knee deep snow carrying our bikes.

Overall a good day, edit of the riding will come soon, Stay BAB.

Apologies.

Sorry for the lack of post the last few days been having a few problems, but not to worry got little post slightly BMX related and wanted peoples opinions.
For my college work at the moment I'm creating a 1 minute video with any choice of story so this is my plot and title so far, have a read and let me know what you think got some really high end kit to use for it the next five days so if anyones about while i'm doing it come along as i'm going to be filming riding footage with it too(at Vbridge) !

Plot

A young lad the age of sixteen is having problems at home, he lives with his mum and brother. His mum is 38 years old and is depressed and an alcoholic, she stays up all night till the next day consuming to much alcohol. His older brother is 20 years old and lives at home, he did want to look up to him as a farther figure but he’s a complete bully and does nothing round the house or anything in his life to help him get by. On top of all this he owes a number of people money, as he had to borrow to pay the rent as his mum is failing to. To escape this the only thing he has in his life is his BMX and music.

Oh and also i found this video a few weekes back and realy like the shot were they are following him in the car what you think, really sad story though so definatly worth the watch,Stay BAB.

Sunderland BMX scene.

Moving up to Sunderland i always new that there was quite large BMX scene, but since moving here i've came to realize its larger then i had thought. Sunderland have many BMX riders from right across the city, from Shields all the way down to Ryhope. Now after doing a little research into some of the BMX groups around here, i managed to get some really good videos dug up from the present to back in 2000.
So one of the groups i came across was NSF, Northeast Street Foundation which was founded by Chris Souter who rode for Seventies and Hoffman, now im not so sure on who excatly rides or rode for them but i have found edits of most NSF videos. I also found this"If you look in the dictionary you'll see that the definition of street is NSF YOUTH CREW".NSF also had a BMX store in Newcastle.
NSF 1

So after a bit more of watching videos i've realised that James Newrick whos in NSF1 now rides for S&M,4Down, Retribution, Hate and Team to Street.
Now another group of lads that I know, ride for SBR which stands for Sunderland BMX rebellion, now SBR was founded by Martin Cook also known as 'Cookie', now on what i have found they have been going since like 2002 and have been producing since then with many street and park edits hitting thousands of views.

I have ridden with a few of the lads from the SBR and on what ive seen so far including videos, there no holding back really you've just have to get s*@t done and its all about the pegs. Now there is a end of 2010 video been mixed up as we speak and shall be dropped soon but thats for another post. Overall through the different riders i've met it has registered that Sunderland is about the pegs and i for one will not be changing my opinion on that one and will be sticking to my four pegs, i will drop news about the riding as it goes, also some of the riders from around Sunderland post on blogs so check out some links below to youtube pages and blogspots. Stay BAB.

Road Fools.

Now I've been watching these videos probably since I started riding my kids bike three years ago and will honestly never be able to pull myself away from them. Its not about the fancy filming or special affects it just the way in which they document a group of friends having a good time. I think its great way of showing what BMX is really about, meeting new people, traveling, obviously riding and just purely having a good time. Road fools has now been going for eighteen series and had some of the best BMX riders from across the globe shredding their bikes over the ten days of each trip. So I thought i would treat you to some videos from Props visuals to keep you stoked on riding BMX. Stay BAB.

Hope you enjoyed them, leave some comments on how you feel about BMX.

Wrap up and prepare cos' this snow isn't holding back!

So the winters finally hit us and she isn't holding back, concrete that was perfect for a BMX rider like myself has now turned into this deadly white surface that is unsafe for man and machine. The disease is now spreading and the whole of the UK is becoming engulfed in this deadly white blanket of snow. So the reason for me being on this subject is to run you through a few simple steps into keeping your self sane during the winter and also keeping yourself warm and alive if venturing out into the snow.
To begin with I'm going to run you through keeping yourself sane in the desperate times when bordem becomes almost a killer, now depending on what you may be interested in such as BMX, Football or even going to School you realy need to make sure that your still getting that dose, for example for you BMX riders out there I would consider stocking up on the latest issues of ride magazine possibly even a Front magazine, also make sure to check out the BMX websites that all ways updated daily(I'll link them below) now if your lucky enough to have possibly an open space to ride that is covered from the snow I would advice you to take the risk wrap up and venture to it and ride your heart out!
Which brings me onto wrapping up and preparing yourself correctly for the snow. Now depending on what your doing you always need to have atleast two pairs of socks on with some either very thick of water proofs shoes such as wellys, now if your riding obviously your normal shoes just some good socks! Now you will almost defiantly need with some shorts or possibly long johns underneath, then you will want a good pair of either jeans or joggers which completes the bottom half. Now for the top I would advise possibly a few layers of t-shirts maybe even sneak a vest in to, then a nice jumper of hoody finsished with a very thick water proof jacket. To finish you'll need gloves a wooly hat and maybe even a scalf! As you are now ready to brave the snow, you could possibly add either a nice brew whipped up by the mum, irn bru or a nice beer this is incase of emergency. I hope this realy helps and please do comment if you think that may be anything else added to help survive and also tell me what you've been doing since the deadly white blanket hit us! Stay BAB and stay Safe!

My BAB boys really did do everything for me and always were there for me and had my back. So heres a few videos thats I've just made up today that I had forgotten to edit, I will probaby post some old videos as well along the way just for entertainment but obviously will still blog as normal, please enjoy. Stay BAB!

'Me local' Silksworth.

'Me local' as Ben Hennon says in his thirty seconds edit is now my new local, Silksworth skate park is now my new Wezza. Being from Peterborough I weren't really used to a great selections of parka I was basically stuck with Wezza which was two small quarter pipes and a small jump box, now for me and lads it did do us the job considering we learnt most of our tricks at that place but now I have to biggest opportunity of riding a good skate park every week. Now to start with its a concrete skate park, it has everything you can ask for.
The selection of street madness comes with ledges ,rails and nice flat bank hips. Good enough for a full blown pegs session on a cold winters night. Now although my peg trickery was not to any particular standard riding the park defiantly has given me more chance to put pegs to ledge, many of the BMX locals being into street because of back in the day 'Silky' was not available to them and all they had was the streets, which means more people to session street with me. Here's a video to shows some ledge session time.

Ledge Madness.. from Ryan Hendry on Vimeo.

Now this is were the parks selections of fine quarters comes in, with a range of size the quarter are giving names depending on the size from big to small, Big red (the penultimate), medium red, little red, big yellow, little yellow ,little green , the road to nowhere (vert), medium spin, big spine, little spine, hip into red and hip out of yellow. Now there's a selection. With lines everywhere it does not seem to get boring, really good flow and sizes. Now I've met quite a lot of local rider already and have also managed to get a few sessions done with videos and photos, all really good people and no hassle with chav's or radgy's as the mackems say so really good local park.

Looking forward to many session at the place any many videos will be coming out of it, just hold tight and wait till the deadly white stuff leaves us and all shall be well! Enjoy.

Riders, Me, Dchum, Jay and Ben.

Mackem Interview with Mark "Dchum" Davis.

As I have moved up to the north I thought it was only rite that I got an interview going to give everyone including myself a little bit more knowledge and understanding about the mackems from a mackems point of view, so here we go a Q & A with Dchum.

What does it mean to be mackem?

It’s something I’ve never really thought about, but I’m proud of where I live, I love supporting the local team (Sunderland) and the BMX scene is as swift as it gets. Red & white army - mackem for life”

What’s a popular mackem food or foods?

“Chip butty splash and pease pudding hahaha without doubt the 2 greatest things ever!”

What about drinks?

“Double maxim from Sunderland”

What words in particular from the mackem dictionary do you use the most?

“hahaha erm hard one this why I man and mara”

A famous mackem story?

“It’s believed the term mackem was brought about when Sunderland had a booming ship industry the ships would be made here on the river wear then taken away hence the name mackem n tackem

Who is your mackem hero?

without doubt it has to be Wearside Jack”

Give me a little more insight into this Jack?

A Jack the ripper hoax from Sunderland who had the police running in circles, he evaded capture for about 36 year’s”

Did being mackem have an influence on your riding?

“It was a massive influence on my riding both NSF 1 & 2 were made here and they are the streets videos known to man. I once read a quote saying Sunderland is street and always will be and it's true even the daft park edits have a street vibe n H-man said the 2009 edit was the streetest park video he had ever seen. SBR

Snow.

Due to weather and lack of motivation to post because of this depressing weather here is a nice bit of dub-step made by my good friend James Griffin, 11 minutes of goodness, enjoy.

Seaburn Jam.

So the Seaburn Jam was back in August now so a few months have past since but still can recall some memories of the day. So the jam has now ran for I think the last couple of years this on what i've been told, the turn out on the day was very successful with a lot of riders from Sunderland and Newcastle arriving. Now over the course of the day it featured a few random parts one example being Dchum t-bagging a Squid.
The set up for the jam was pretty cool considering the size of the park, the jam organisers being very committed and building in a new rail like they did last year, also they built a curved wooden wall-ride, an extension wall-ride and a sub box.
The amount of tricks sent during the day was pretty nuts and i've got a nice video below from the day that shows a lot of tricks one of which I cant even name. There were prizes given out for best trick etc and I think I got myself some new grips and t-shirt probably for being the new boy, weren't complaining though, so anyway enjoy the video and pictures.

Sunday 21 November 2010

Dynamix trip ends in R-Kade session.

As most of you know the weather is officially gone one hundred percent crap, what was going to be a nice session around the street of Sunderland sending some pegs for SBR video turned out being cancelled and a quick plan B was put in place, Dynamix skatepark session indoor and a quick train journey away. Not always that simple though, met Rax, Jonn, Jay and Kieran at the train station all on time for a 12:30 train, but no thats not happening train cancelled and replacement coach put in place and we were not welcome by the bus driver in anyway, so we had to wait for an hour till the train was back up and running. In this time I tryed changing my chain to a new Shadow half link that was a fail and oh wait plan changed again we're not going Dynamix now we're of to R-Kade with Lee and Karl so we hop in Jay's dads taxi to Lee's and we were set and of to Redcar.

Now this was all fine with me, sadly we had to leave Jonn as he had a party and this also meant that the £4 i spent on my adult train ticket was a complete waist of money! So the mission was now in full flow and nothing was stopping us, got to Redcar in one piece and the park looked pretty sweet. As we got our session on I and also the others could not help but be pretty pissed of about how unaware of this thing called 'snaking', scooter and skateboard riders were, now I have no problem with them but when they are being so ignorant and thinking they own the park, they just don't (rant over) so apart from that had a pretty good session everyone getting their moves out Jay getting whips done everywhere, Karl sending a whip over the jump box, Rax with his killer barspins and no handers and Kieran with his deadly pegs. Looking forward to the next session and will defiantly be whipping up a plan to take the boards and scooters out of the equation.

Quick thanks to Lee for taking us to Redcar and solving our problem and Rax for sorting me out some mullah for petrol!
Check his shop out to;http://www.thebmxbox.co.uk/

Irn Bru.

When out riding everyone has that one particular drink that they love and need to get themselves buzzing for a good session! When I lived in Peterborough I was lucky enough to have a very large Tescos near by with a mass of selection and for us boys It began with cheap bottles of Boost then when Tescos raised the price we moved on to whatever energy drink we could get our hands on, relentless, vitamin water, lucozade and even tropical juice! When moving upto Sunderland I obviously knew that I would still have this selection but that was all about to change! I was reunited with Irn Bru, I can't even describe the taste but its just perfect in everyway, they are always selling cheap and always does the job perfect. I'd like to take this time to thank Scotland for the genius creation they call Irn Bru!

I........My Girlfriend, Do you ?

My First Rail.

So moving to Sunderland I had quite a big feeling that the riding scene was going to be pretty big and that they were mostly about the Pegs. I was correct, after riding Seaburn and eventually venturing to Silkworth a much larger concrete park I got to meet a few locals one of these being Jake Kitching, he told me about a rail rite near to were I was living in Redhouse when I first moved up. He mentioned to me about how he had got a picture taken on that rail for an article in a recnt ride issue(143 "Those underdogs") , so after explaining to me the location of this rail me and Nathan decided to go and check it out. When I got there I could see it just set perfectly in to a grass slope with a little set of stairs down them (perfect for the leftside) it took me a few runs to get my speed rite an get over my nerves, but as soon I knew it I was on the rail and then of it. It all just seemed to happen so quick but I could not control myself I was stoked, Nathan managed to get it on video and also a picture, after that I couldnt stop grinding it!

Ledge Madness.

Today me and my brother Nathan headed down to the local skatepark Silksworth(will blog on this soon) not planning on possibly filming a video but on just riding and maybe a few clips here and there, the reason being I finally had my camera back in use after loosing my charger, so anyway ended up meetin some of the lads D Chum, Ben and Rax down there and the session ended up in Ledge Madness and could no way be missed by my camera lense so here you are, Ledge Madness.Filmed by myself and edited by Nathan.

Me and my BMXs rocky relationship.

Today I thought I'd give you a little insight into my relationship with my BMX and how possibly if it was human would be long gone by now. So some of you may have met my BAB mobile by now but if you haven't ill give you a little info on it and how it doesn't seem to look so well, EVER.

Im running a Federal Division Pro frame thats had about two owners before me and been through a number of coats of paint, apart from being slightly old she has seemed to do me really well, moving on from my frame the rest of my bike just doesn't seem to agree with what I want to do, since moving to Sunderland the parts have just seemed to go down hill. I have had so far countless punctures, three pairs of grips, two tyres and one chain that has had a battering still going but batterd and also a lot of snapped spokes. Now I may be complaining slightly of how annoying it has been but at the end of the day its been worth ive ridden some neet spots so worth it in the end. Im now just praying that she doesn't pack up and leave!

Now being in Sunderland the problem with me having all these problem is that I dont have someone who i could just get to fix it for me which in a way has worked out as i have had to learn the skill of fixing stuff, for example truing a wheel and fixing a chain repeatedly. Heres a little video below of me trying a rail and well its pretty self-explanatory.

Monday 15 November 2010

The riding began

This is a little insight into my first two day of riding, written in past tense as a wrote it back when it happend. Pictures will be in following posts.

Day 1

"So finally I'm in Sunderland, the bmx has made it and I'm in a new house. Well for the moment anyway! Redhouse isn't the best place for riding but having Seaburn as "me local", just down the hill I'm sorted. Riding down the hill to begin with is fun enough. First time I went down I met a couple of riders William, Adam, Nathan and Matt, they are all pretty good little riders for their age. I managed to send a few barspins and get a good session before the rain come down but the next few weeks should be a good ride!"

Day 2

"Seaburn session again, this time with me brother, arranged to meet some of the lads from the first ride and they turned up! We had a pretty sweet little session got to know the riders a bit better and had a good shred! Managed to send this little rail they got set up and tried an icepick but slipped the pedal and it wasn't very nice. I got a nice rail ride to barspin off and feeble to easy 360! There seemed to be a lot of crashes with adam snapping his chain, nathan eating shit and my brother hanging up hard but overall a good start."

Getting things rolling.

To get the blog rolling and make some things a bit more understandable, I'll get all the boring stuff out of the way and tell you a little about myself. I've been riding BMX for over 3 years now and they have possibly been the best years of my life so far, in this time I started seeing my girlfriend Keera. I've also met a group of lads who are now my best friends and BMX crew 'BAB BMX'. The reason behind the name 'BAB' came from a sticker my Dad gave me from work a few years back, we decided; like kids do, to put the stickers on our BMXs and from then on we decided to be 'BAB' which we chose to stand for BigAssBalls. During these 3 years, I have ridden a countless amount of skate parks and found myself in some pretty funny situations! I'm really interested in Film and Photography and am currently studying a BTEC in media at Shiney Row college. Hope that helped you know a little bit about myself, Stay BAB.

Welcome to Abmxjourney.

As a lot of you may know, I’m Ryan. I’ve recently packed my bags and BMX and relocated up north in Sunderland where for some reason the sun doesn’t like to shine too often. I have now been living here for a couple of months with family and my girlfriend, I’ve already met a few really cool people and rode some sweet spots, which brings me to the reason I’m starting this blog. Since moving to Shiney Row in Sunderland and riding my local parks in Penshaw and Silksworth I’ve come across a number of faces and also great riding spots that I really wanted to share with the world wide web and possibly give people a more detailed insight into the life of a rider up North. I’m planning to update as much as possible with pictures and videos of places I’ve visited and also tell you some stories of the weeks that have already passed, hope you enjoy, stay BAB.
